How are food and the Sustainable Development Goals linked?

Our current food system is faced with multiple challenges, from the lack of safe, nutritious food to unequal access to food. The Sustainable Development Goals aim to address these issues.


It has become clear that a global food system transformation is needed, as population rise, urbanisation, environmental damage, and climate change create further obstacles for our food supplies.


This much needed transformation of our food systems means that the way we produce and consume food must be completely re-designed... a pretty big task, we say! The question of how we will do this is still being discussed and debated, in politics, business and day-to-day conversation. Take a look at this video to learn more about why we need to change our food system:

An opportunity for reform?

The UN Food Systems Summit, which will be held during the UN General Assembly in New York on the 23rd September 2021. It's the next big opportunity for these issues to be discussed, and hopefully addressed.


It's a really exciting event, and we recommend joining to learn more about the key issues affecting our food system. More events will likely follow, so keep an eye out!


Scientists, world leaders, businesses and everyday consumers will have an important opportunity here: to contribute to deciding the next steps for transforming our food system and achieving the UN's 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).


Ideas for mitigating and adapting to climate change range from introducing more low-carbon agricultural technology to encouraging consumers to eat more plants, and less meat. All of these ideas, however, need money, and this will also be a big topic during the UN Food System Summit.
