What produce is in season now in the UK?

Eating local and seasonal food is a great way to reduce your carbon footprint. Wondering what food is in season now? Here's our list of seasonal ingredients for each month, in the UK.

What are seasonal ingredients in the UK?

Seasonal ingredients are foods harvested and eaten during their natural growing season. This can be for ingredients around the world (global seasonality), or for the growing seasons of the UK (local seasonality).

In this list, we're focusing on ingredients that are local and seasonal in the UK. There are a wide variety of delicious and nutritious fruit and vegetables around the year grown in British soil. Making the most of their natural growing seasons can satisfy our bellies, as well as have a positive impact on the climate.

Why are seasonal ingredients better for the climate?

British seasonal ingredients use the UK's natural conditions and temperatures to grow at the optimal time of year.

When we grow food out of the normal season, we need to re-create these optimal growing conditions artificially. This uses enormous amounts of energy, for example in heated greenhouses, which produce greenhouse gases (CO₂e) as a by-product.

Eating seasonal ingredients, grown locally in the UK, also reduces the carbon footprint of food. Transporting food from farm-to-fork contributes around 10% of the greenhouse gas emissions (CO₂e) of the UK's food system.

Brits can minimise these greenhouse gas emissions by eating seasonal ingredients that are grown in the UK, rather than relying on ingredients transported across the world to our shores.

Climatarians looking to reduce their carbon footprint can choose food that's both local and seasonal to reduce their dietary carbon footprint
